Libraries critical to development: Education official. I found this article of interest from St. Kitts and Nevis. This small island nation in the Caribbean is giving serious thought to the role of libraries and information literacy in their schools. Twenty two librarians and teachers attended a workshop which was sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the Department of Education, Nevis.
The article notes, "According to Grant, the department was cognisant of the fact that the library should be an integral part of the school's reading programme and that collaboration should exist between the classroom teacher and the librarian for the creation of units and lessons that linked content, information literacy and technology literacy."
I can not argue with that. I hope this small island nation can accomplish some great things in the area of information literacy and then report the results back to the world.
