Position Announcement - Information Fluency Librarian, California Maritime Academy

Information Fluency Librarian

The California Maritime Academy, a campus of The California State University, is a bachelor's degree granting institution offering degrees in Business Administration, Engineering Technology, Global Studies/Maritime Affairs, Marine Transportation, and Mechanical Engineering.

We seek an enthusiastic and forward thinking librarian to work with our Information Fluency Coordinator to further develop and establish our Information Fluency Program and participate in library public services. Working with campus faculty in the departments of Business Administration, Engineering Technology, and Marine Transportation, the Information Fluency Librarian will ensure that students graduate with an advanced level of understanding in using information resources. The Information Fluency Librarian will provide excellent service and instruction to library users; create instructional modules, library study guides, and handouts; provide reference services; develop the library's collections; participate in professional development activities; serve on campus committees; lead and participate in special projects and other library operations as needed.

Strong communication skills and a dedicated customer service attitude are crucial to success in this position. The candidate will have a strong interest in guiding students and faculty in the use of research tools. A desire and commitment to working in a collaborative, team environment is important. The candidate should possess flexibility and creativity in assisting users in an evolving environment of integrated library systems, paper-based resources, and online information. A commitment to developing and maintaining familiarity with current and emerging trends in information fluency is required. The Information Fluency Librarian reports to the Library Director.

LOCATION: The campus is located in Vallejo on the north shore of the Carquinez Strait at the northeastern extreme of the San Pablo Bay, approximately 30 miles northeast of San Francisco.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: MLS from an ALA accredited institution or equivalent; classroom teaching or presentation or public speaking experience with the subject matter of information fluency (literacy, competency); solid understanding of and ability to teach general computing applications; broad knowledge of information resources. Must be willing to serve as ship's librarian at sea, away from Vallejo on the Training Ship Golden Bear for up to two months each summer.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience with an information fluency (literacy, competency) program; knowledge of web editing software; reference desk experience; collection development experience; experience working in an academic library; special projects experience in a library.
