Purpose of position: The reference/instruction librarian serves as the Library's liaison to the College of Education and the Political Science Department and contributes to and supports the Library's mission to foster and promote quality learning, teaching and research.
Essential functions: Acts as liaison to the College of Education and Political Science Department including development of reference collections, information literacy programs, promotion and outreach, and specialized services in these academic areas. Provides quality reference & research services in person and online; including serving as second tier referral for advanced reference assistance. Participates with instruction team to create and deliver instruction sessions for faculty and students which incorporate the use of active learning strategies, both in person and online. Works closely with other Information Services and Information Literacy librarians to plan, develop, maintain and assess innovative instructional and outreach programs. Works closely with Information Resources librarians on collection development and management of the reference collection, including purchases, transfers and withdrawals for both print and electronic resources. Serves on library, university, and professional committees and organizations. Attends training and professional seminars to maintain and increase knowledge and to keep up with current library trends.
Required qualifications: Master's degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program. Current knowledge of print and electronic resources and of the application of technology to the design and delivery of research services and instruction. Capacity for working enthusiastically, flexibly, and creatively in a student-centered environment. Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with people of diverse backgrounds. Knowledge of the research process and with evolving models of scholarly communication. Excellent interpersonal skills; verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated organizational and time management skills. Competency with Microsoft Outlook; MS Office; Windows Operating System and file management.
Preferred qualifications: Public services experience in an academic library. Experience providing library instruction and reference services. Knowledge of information literacy theory and practice, various teaching methodologies and learning styles. Experience with emerging computer technologies (such as Web 2.0) and their applications in academic libraries. Creativity and experience designing instructional/informational materials, both in print and online. Experience with outreach and marketing services to students and faculty. Experience with course management software such as WebCT or Blackboard. Knowledge of state and federal legal resources. Familiarity with the grant writing process.
